The Unique of After the Dark (a.k.a The Philosophers)

Hi guys, how’s your day? I hope everything is okay. Yup, now I want to talk about film named After the Dark or as known as (a.k.a) The Philosophers). I believe that one of you knew about the film. This movie is a science fiction psychological thriller, written and directed by John Huddles. Despite the story (for me) is not really interesting, but there are some good points to watch it. And yes, you are right! The biggest reason why I review this movie is because of the plot. It captured Indonesia’s landscape!



The movie took place in Indonesia, including Belitung Island Sumatera, Bromo in East Java, the Prambanan temple and Jakarta. The main character of the movie is Petra (Sophie Lowe), Mr. Zimit (James D’ Arcy), and James (Rhus Wakefield). The casts in the movie are also students from Turkey, Iran, Australia, Africa, Canada, US and London.

Mr. Zimit was a Philosophy teacher at an International School in Jakarta. He had been challenged his twenty student with exercise. The purpose of the exercise was to prepare them to confront the atomic apocalypse. So, they imagine that the world would end, and they struggled to survive.

Mr. Zimit distributed the cards that contained a detail character for exercise. James got a card with the character of an organic farmer. Petra was an engineer, and the other students also have their characters. In the exercise, the students defended their opinion and right to describe how important they are. James and Petra have good opinion, so they were save. The defensive needed because if they failed, it meant they couldn’t save and Mr. Zimit executed them. And in this exercise, the students failed the mission.

During the class, James found out that he and Petra were fixed to have advantage character, but Mr. Zimit refused to explain the reason.

After the exercise, the class ended and the student left except Petra. In fact, Mr. Zimit and Petra have an affair. Petra accused Mr. Zimit had punished her and James (because they are a couple). Mr. Zimit is so jealous because Petra chose James who is beneath her. And in that case, Petra also argued that intelligence was not all the matters.

This movie actually had a unique story about the way of thinking when the ends of life come. But, there is a lacking. The ending just ruins the whole of the story. It’s like a black hole and very opposite with the construction of story.
