Evaluation Source for Middle-High Schooler (OPVL-Approach)

How could we ensure that our students can evaluate a source? That question is very essential if you work under international curricula such as IB and Cambridge since it is a required skill before they enter the uni education level. And there are some approaches we could refer to such as triangulation data, CRAAP Test, and OWL Purdue Online Writing Lab. But one thing you need to consider is how we also train them in using their critical thinking skill.

The OPVL approach could be used for multi-level grade from the middle to the high schoolers. According to Middle School, the Red Scroll Library of Western Academy of Beijing; Origin, Purpose, Value, and Limitation (OPVL) is a technique for analyzing historical documents. It is used extensively in the International Baccalaureate curriculum and testing materials, and is incredibly helpful in teaching students to be critical observers. It is also known as Document Based Questions (DBQ).

The chart/ template that I post here is also editable to the grade level. It is important to adjust the template, since the level grade has a different ability in the usage of critical thinking. What I have from the pictures are coming from a grade 9 student.
